Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a future time and a given location. Human beings have attempted to predict the weather for millennia for various reasons mostly been agricultural or military based. Weather forecasts have taken place formally since the nineteenth century.

How is it done?
A prediction of the weather can be made my collecting quantitative data about the current state of the atmosphere and then using scientific understand about atmospheric processes to attempt how the atmosphere will change over a period of time. This is done by considering the atmosphere to be a fluid and applying equations for fluid dynamics and thermodynamics to attempt to predict how it will change over time. This type of prediction requires a large amount of data to be used in long and complicated calculations, because of this for weather to be predicted quickly and efficiently it must be done so on a super computer.

Numerical weather prediction
Numerical weather prediction models are computer simulations of the atmosphere. They take the analysis as the starting point and evolve the state of the atmosphere forward in time using physics and fluid dynamics. The output from the model provides the basis of the weather forecast. This basically means that a model is built of the current atmosphere, data from this is processed through equations and a new model is created, this new model is generally used to create the forecast and data from it may be inputted into a program to create the kind of weather forecast we see every day on the internet or tv.

The data used in the calculations for the weather predictions is collected using a variety of techniques, One of these is to use a specialised satalite designed to record data about the weather, The first one of these was TIROS-I, this was introduced in 1960, During the 1970’s buoys were introduced to the seas to help improve the resolution of surface measurements over the sea which until this point was impossible. A variety of monitoring equipment is also placed in multiple strategically placed weather stations which are connected to the offices and computers which process the data and perform the calculations through a network.
